Our path towards next generation mobile networks in Europe:
5G and beyond

15th – 16th April 2024, Berlin, Germany

Across Europe, 5G is being rolled out by mobile operators. 5G has been heralded as a transformational technology, with its improved characteristics over previous generations of mobile technologies giving rise to numerous and varied uses and significant socio-economic benefits. The transformational nature of 5G has been widely recognised by politicians. Within the European Union, for example, 5G is at the heart of the bloc’s ‘Digital Decade’ initiative that aims by 2030 to transform the digital skills of its citizens and how citizens and businesses use digital technologies.

5G deployment is becoming more widespread, with mobile operators rolling out their networks and launching corresponding services and products. But as these networks are rolled out and services launched, questions have emerged on multiple fronts – how can mobile operators generate revenue from 5G? Will other players in the market grab all the value that it promises to create? With its advanced capabilities and performance characteristics, to what extent will 5G replace or complement WiFi? How dependent are the benefits of 5G on its integration with other technologies such as AI, cloud computing, etc? And lastly, will 5G be nothing more than a stepping stone on the route to 6G?

With this in mind, we welcome contributions that focus on 5G (and subsequent mobile telecommunications) within Europe. We specifically welcome contributions on the following topics:

• • The rollout and adoption of 5G networks.
  • The policies and regulatory regimes surrounding 5G.
  • The role of 5G in service innovation.
  • Novel business models and the monetisation potential of 5G by mobile operators.
  • The integration of 5G with other technologies (e.g., AI, edge computing etc).
  • The relationship between 5G and other wireless technologies (e.g., 6G, WiFi).
  • 5G and digital divides.

Contributions outside of these topics are welcome but they must relate to 5G and beyond mobile technologies.

Abstract requirement:

Your abstract, which should be 400 – 500 words on 1 page of A4, should include the following:

• Title of the abstract / panel session
• A clear statement of the research question
• Remarks on the methodology adopted in the paper
• Outline of (expected) results
• 1 or 2 key references

Our intention is to produce a collected volume based on contributions. When submitting your abstract please indicate whether you want to be considered for inclusion.

The event will take place in Berlin, Germany, on the 15 and 16 April 2024. The local host is the Weizenbaum Institute for the Networked Society, Berlin, Germany.
